Leadership Skills part 1

Learning Outcomes: This course is aimed at young scientists who will be tasked with leadership duties in teams and projects during their PhD or in research. However, the content is also highly relevant to careers outside of academia.

Through interactive exercises you will primarily learn more about yourself and your individual leadership skills. What experiences do you have with "leadership" or "being led"? In case studies you will also benefit from the experiences of other participants. You will learn about different types of leadership and deepen useful skills (e.g. motivating, deciding, negotiating) in leading people (groups, teams, individuals). Regardless of how much leadership experience you already have: anyone can be in a leadership position tomorrow.

For leadership in work projects, a good basic knowledge of project planning skills is very helpful. Regarding this topic, the Graduate Academy offers the module "Project Management".

Methods: The modules are designed as a workshop with training elements. Participants will work through the content together and gain their own experience in interactive exercises. Inputs will be given in form of presentations or demonstrations. The following forms or methods of work will be used:

  • Lecture/video with .ppt
  • individual work, small group work, whisper groups
  • Discussions, card queries, constellations, reflection discussions, feedback
  • Presentation and interactive exercises
