Good Scientific Practice

Course description: The scientific method relies on trust. We are trusting scientist, that they work in all aspects of their work with the highest possible objectivity. This concerns experiments and data recording, the following investigations and analyses, and - of course - the writing up, presentation and discussion of the results. No research is possible without referring to the previous results of others. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to acknowledge transparently and clearly the insights and results of other scientists by citing their work. This whole approach is necessary to ensure objectivity and reproducibility of science and research and is generally called “good scientific practice”. Starting from examples of recorded scientific misconduct the principles of good scientific practice are introduced and discussed. We will especially discuss grey areas in the daily scientific work and talk about the boundaries of documentation essentials and objectivity.
